Overall grade point average (GPA)
Still studying: Enter your current average grade. Please note that you may only enter a number value here. Classifications (“Second class”) or letter classifications (A+, A, B etc.) are not permitted.
If your university computes and confirms an average grade, enter that value.
Do not convert your grades to another system, report your GPA as it is. (e.g. a value between 1-100 points; 1-4 grades; 1-20 etc.)
Do not convert mentions such as “with honors,” or “e lode” (in Italy) to any additional points. For example, “30 e lode” should be counted as a 30 in the average calculation.”
If your average grade is not confirmed by the university, calculate the unweighted average grade from all of the grades received up to the time of application and recorded in the transcript.
Please do not calculate your average grade in another grading system, but use the national one stipulated. To calculate the average grade you may use the following Downloadgrade calculator. (XLSX, 13 KB)vertical_align_bottom
Minimum grade Bachelor from University of Applied Sciences (Fachhochschule)
For admission, a Bachelor's degree from a university of applied sciences requires an overall grade of at least 5.0 in the Swiss grading system or 2.0 in the German or Austrian system.
If no overall grade is reported by your university, ETH Zurich calculates the weighted average in accordance with the directive DownloadAdmission to Master's degree programmes (PDF, 191 KB)vertical_align_bottom. Self-calculated, unweighted average grades are not taken into account for the fulfilment of the minimum grade and are always recalculated by the Admissions Office.
Some universities use an internal resp. national grading system, while also additionally providing a converted GPA. In this case, submit the calculated GPA according to the internal resp. national grading scheme. For example: A university uses a grading system from 0 to 100, GPA is 91, but also provides a converted GPA of 3.9 on a scale from 1 to 4. In this case, only the GPA of 91 and not 3.9.
Classification schemes, for instance second class, or letter schemes such as A+, A, B, etc. are not permitted. If your university uses such classification or letter schemes, it is very likely that it provides a converting scale so its students can apply at other universities, too.
Important: When you calculate your GPA, please use only the official grading scale of your university. In the unlikely case that your university uses classificiation or letter schemes as mentioned before, but does not have a converting grading scale published, please ask your studies administration office for providing a scale to you.
If you have already completed your studies: Please enter the completion grade confirmed by your home university.
Grading scale
Please explain here the (national/university) grading system used by your university.
- Best grade: Best possible grade according to the system
- Pass grade: The lowest grade which still allows you to pass the examination
- Minimum grade: Lowest grade in the grading scale
Please put particular care in ensuring that your grade and scale match the following consistency constraints:
- Either (mostly)
Minimum grade < pass grading <= your GPA < best possible grade - or (Germany and further countries)
Minimum grade > pass grade >= your GPA > best possible grade
Examples:
- China: Best grade = 100; Pass grade = 60-69; Minimum grade = 10
- France: Best grade= 20; Pass grade= 8-10; Minimum grade 0-8
- Germany: Best grade = 1; Pass grade = 4; Minimum grade = 5
- Great Britain: Best grade = 100; Pass grade = 40; Minimum grade = 0
- India: Best grade = 10; Pass grade = 3; Minimum grade = 0;
Best grade =100; Pass grade = 45; Minimum grade = 1
- Iran: Best grade = 20; Pass grade = 10; Minimum grade = 0
- Italy: Best grade = 30; Pass grade = 18; Minimum grade = 0 (also use 30 for “30 e lode”)
- USA: Best grade = 4; Pass grade = 2; Minimum grade = 0

If your university does not issue confirmations of status, do not enter a value.
